HOW SPORT AND PLAY FIGHT HIV/AIDS

Sport and play are innovative, low-cost, effective tools for HIV/AIDS education, awareness building and prevention.

UN agencies and their partners have identified several ways sport and play, through its convening power, can perform major roles in the prevention of infectious diseases (such as HIV/AIDS):

a)  Sport’s overwhelming popularity allows it to communicate and promote HIV/AIDS messages to a wider audience.

b)  Its non-political nature makes sport a perfect medium to effectively transmit messages about health and behaviour change to different groups of population – from young people at risk, to adults and community leaders.

c)  Prominent athletes and Local Coaches can be powerful role models for young people in their countries and communities, and exert a strong positive influence.
